Things to do With Your Dog During COVID-19 Quarantine

The K-9 Center • Apr 01, 2020
Since there have been measures put in place to ensure people's safety across the nation during the outbreak of COVID-19, many people are spending much more time indoors than usual. For those of us who have pets, keeping your dog happy and entertained all day long can be a challenge, especially for those who are trying to work from home- distraction free. Our team has put together a list of things you can do with your furry friend to make your life a little bit easier during this period.

Teach a New Trick - Mental stimulation is a great way to keep your dog entertained and to keep their brain sharp. Training helps keep your dog happy, obedient, and mentally active. There are many tricks you can teach your dog such as take a bow, shake, high five, and go to bed!

Walk a New Route - If you have a street or path that you walk on a daily basis, it might be good to switch it up and let your dog smell some new scents. Remember on all walks to practice safe social distancing and to avoid contact with others.

Work on Training Behaviors - While your dog may already know some tricks, their leash commands might not be fantastic. When you are out and walking your dog, use this time to reinforce basic commands such as come, heel, easy, sit, and stay.

Food & Toy Puzzles - There are many food related toys and puzzles that can keep your dog occupied and happy! Instead of dinner in their doggy bowl, you can use a ball that holds their food so they have to roll it around to get kibbles out - this provides them with a challenge! You can also use puzzle toys to hide treats inside of and let your pup figure out how to get them out!

Set Designated Play Times - Dogs are happiest when they have a set schedule. In order to keep your dog from eating into your work day, you can set specific break times for you to feed, walk, and play with your dog. Having this structured time will not only help you get your work done, it will also help reinforce obedience with your pup.

There are so many things you can do during this unexpected time to keep you and your pup both happy. Each dog has its own unique quirks and personality so try a few different things to see what works best. From everyone here at K9 Center, we hope you and your pet are staying healthy and happy.
